Friday, I'm in Love...

This week started off a little rough, but thankfully, it's ending on a high note. Do you remember this picture that I posted in Monday's bumpdate?

Yeah, so I got a call from my OB's office on Monday afternoon saying that I had failed my 1 hour glucose test. Say what?!?? And to make matters worse, I hadn't just failed it by a couple of points...I failed it by 32 {the cutoff is 140 and my blood sugar was 172}. To say I was upset and a little pissed would be a big understatement. There's no way I could have gestational diabetes...I have no family history of diabetes, I've been exercising 4-5 times per week, and I've been eating a {relatively} healthy diet. So, Monday evening, I did a bunch of research, and decided that I would hardly eat any carbs for dinner that night {I had already eaten a bunch earlier in the day}, I would limit my carb intake to 150 grams on Tuesday, and then take the test Wednesday morning.

Wednesday morning was not fun. I woke up with a little headache, then had to go in a drink the same fruit punch nastiness, but this time with DOUBLE the sugar.

it was disgustingly sweet....the waiting around for 3 hours was not fun either.

I had convinced myself that I did have gestational diabetes, and yesterday morning when I woke up, I had almost accepted this fact. When my doctor's office number popped up on my phone yesterday morning during clinic, I was like, okay, this is it. And what did the nurse say? I PASSED!!!!!! I was so happy, and thoroughly enjoyed my extra piece of bread at lunch {and the cookie when I got home from work...and last night before bed}.

I also celebrated with a bit of retail therapy yesterday afternoon. I had to stop at Target to get a few things, but before I checked out, I decided to stop by the maternity section to see if anything good was on the clearance rack. Well, it was my lucky day because not only did I find a mint green tunic for super super cheap, but I also found a comfy knit dress that I'm wearing today!

that's the mint green shirt on the hanger...more pics of that next week :)

After Target, I stopped at Old Navy to get TJ some new khakis and found a few things for Liam too. I'm only letting myself shop the sale racks for the little guy at this point till I see how many clothes I get at my showers.

Not only was yesterday a great day, but today is Friday, and this weekend is Easter! I'm looking forward to celebrating our Savior's resurrection and spending time with my family. I'm hoping that we'll get at least a thing or two done in the nursery too!

Remember when I mentioned the job thing on Monday? Well, I still can't share details quite yet, but let's just say I'm one step closer to having a real job, and I'm so excited! This is really happening!!! {Mom and Dad, I haven't even told you guys this latest news yet...don't worry, I'll tell you tonight!}

I am feeling truly blessed today. Thank you, God, for all that you do! I am so grateful!!!

P.S. You may {or maybe not} have noticed that I've been MIA around Facebook and Instagram over the last 40 days. I gave those up for Lent, so be ready for lots of picture updates starting on Sunday!

Sunday Social {4 is the Magic Number}

It's been awhile since I linked up with Ashley and Neely for their Sunday Social link-up, and since I have a little bit of time while I eat my cereal before church, I thought I'd get a quick post together!

Sunday Social

{4 Jobs You've Had in Your Life}

1. Sports Medicine Fellow: My current job, and I love it. It's 1 year of additional training beyond the 3 years of Family Medicine, and I'm learning all about caring for musculoskeletal issues, especially in athletes. Next summer, I will finally get a real job, and I can't wait!!

2. Research Assistant: I spent several summers during college and med school helping a local orthopedics practice in their research department. I learned a lot about infection rates in total joint replacement, and even got a paper published!

3. Physical Therapy Aide: The summer after sophomore year of college, I worked at a physical therapy office as an aide. It was fun to learn about PT, but I figured out that summer that it was a good thing I didn't decide to go the PT route. It was also part-time, so it allowed me to get plenty of studying in for the MCAT.

4. Receptionist: For a couple years in high school, I worked as a receptionist for a local real estate office. I would work 4:30-7 after school and either 9-1 or 1-5 on the weekends. It was a great job that paid well and let me do my homework when they weren't busy...which was quite often later in the day or early in the mornings!

{4 Movies You Could Watch Over and Over}

In the spirit of Christmas, I'm going with some of my favorite Christmas movies...

1. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: My all-time favorite Christmas movie...I can't wait to watch it!

2. A Christmas Story: Definitely a classic. My hubby and I saw the musical last year in Chicago, and it was fantastic!

3. Love Actually

4. The Muppet Christmas Carol: Who doesn't love the Muppets?!??

{4 Places You Have Been on Vacation}

1. Europe! We went to London, Paris, and Normandy this summer, and I loved it! Can someone fly me back to Paris...please!!!!

2. Orlando, FL: My parent's have a time share there, and so we always went to Florida for Spring Break when we were younger. Even now, we usually make it back once a year...I love it!

3. Philly, PA: We just went a couple weekends ago to visit my brother. So much to see and do and eat in the City of Brotherly Love!

4. Cabo San Lucas, MX: We went there for our honeymoon and can't wait to go back!!!

~~~~~
Sorry for the lack of pictures today...apparently, I'm over my quota, and I don't have the time to fix it right now! Any ideas on what I need to do?
Hope you have a great Sunday...I'm off to church then I may do some Christmas decorating and/or shopping. Do we really have to go back to work tomorrow? How do 4 days off work go soooo fast!!!
August Mini-Goals {Recap}
How in the world did it get to be the last day of August??? I can't believe how fast this past month has gone! Do you remember this post where I shared my goals for this month? Well, since it's now August 31st, it's time to see how I did....
~~~~~

1. Go to bed at a decent hour. Overall, I think I failed at this one. With the Olympics, blogging, reading, TV, and actually spending some time with TJ, I stayed up too late most nights this month. There were a few nights where I actually got to bed around 10, but it was kind of a rarity. You'll be seeing this again on my September goals.

2. Get up early and exercise before work at least 3 days per week. Well, considering #1, I kind of failed at this one too. Even though I haven't been getting up to work out, I've managed to get a few more runs in, just not in the morning. It still feels good to rack up a few more miles each week.

3. Call at least 1 long-distance friend every week. Partial success! I got to talk or text with a couple of my college friends this month which was great. Unfortunately, I feel like I always get caught in a wicked game of phone tag. Seeing friends in person is even better than a phone call or text, and I was so happy to get to spend a few nights out with my high school loves this month too.

4. Try out some new recipes and work on meal planning for the week. Success! I finally got some use of the menu board I made a month or so ago. I have to say, it was so nice to know exactly what I was going to make when I got home from work each evening. The shrimp vodka pasta I made last week was delicious!

I guess you could say I scored a 50% this month, but being the perfectionist I am, that's not good enough for me. I'll definitely be putting some of these same goals on my list for September, but I'll be adding some new ones too. I'll share them with you next week!

Have a great 3 DAY WEEKEND!

Mini Goals for August

I am totally stealing an idea from one of my blog friends, Lauran. For the past couple months, she has posted a list of "mini-goals" for the month, similar to New Year's Resolutions, but not quite as grand and far-fetched. Obviously, I like Lauran's thinking, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it myself this month. It may not be the best time for me to do this {i.e. just starting fellowship and football season getting underway}, but I figure I may as well give it a try and see how it goes.

In no particular order...

1. Go to bed at a decent hour. Unfortunately, the Olympics will probably keep me from accomplishing this for at least the next week or so, but I still hope to head to bed closer to 10pm than midnight. I have a tendency to want to stay up late watching TV with my hubby, blogging, or reading, and I regret that decision every morning when my alarm goes off between 5 and 6 am. It's a really, really hard habit to break, but I really, really want to work on it.

{Side note: Wednesday night, I did go to bed at 10ish instead of staying up to watch some of the swimming and men's gymnastics. I came down yesterday morning to run and saw the following note on the counter waiting for me...}

time on DVR, sport, & event detail :)

2. In the spirit of #1, my goal is to get up early and exercise BEFORE work at least 3 times each week. I have set my alarm early 3 days this week, but I've only gotten up 1 morning to actually run. Oops. I need to be better about this to get into good running shape again!

3. Call at least 1 long-distance friend each week to catch up. I am so bad with this and always tend to blame the fact that I'm so busy {so are my friends} and too tired after work to sit and talk for a long time. However, I really miss my girls and desperately need to chat with them.

4. Try out some new recipes and work on meal-planning for the week. A few weeks ago, I made a nice little board {thanks Pinterest!} and hung it up in our kitchen so I can write out our meals for the week. I've done it a couple weeks, but I'm slacking a bit this week. I have TONS of recipes clipped from Cooking Light, now I just need to make them. I love cooking, but I want to get out of my cooking rut and get a little more creative in the kitchen.

I know those are only a few goals for the month, but, like I said, it's going to be a very busy one with work, so I don't want to set a bunch of goals that there's no way I could accomplish. I plan on recapping at the end of the month...hopefully there will be more successes than failures!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Weekend To-Do's...

You know I love making lists. Here's my {partial} to-do list for the weekend...

  • Finish Friday clinic notes & billing...holy cow, what a crazy day yesterday was! Everyone showed up, and of course everyone had "something else" to ask me. When you have just "one more question" for the doctor, we often run behind schedule for the rest of the day! Booo....
  • Run...attempting to run 6-8 miles outside today...cross your fingers that I make it through without my knee hurting! {and still breathing too!}
  • Moonlighting...making a little extra cash by doing History & Physicals on new admissions at the Stress Center {our inpatient psychiatric hospital}. Nothing like $300 extra for a minimal amount of work!
  • Manicure...getting my shellac manicure removed and getting a new {non-shellac} manicure on. I decided spending $15 extra was worth it, since it's $10 if you just go in for a removal, but it's included in the price if you have another manicure. Twist my arm!
  • Studying for the boards...wow, I've got a lot to do...questions, reading, reviewing anatomy on my iPad...I think I have enough to last me a long time! Hopefully I get 100 times more done this weekend than I did in the past week {which was essentially nothing}!
  • Girl's Night...sushi and drinks with my high school besties...yes please!

LOVE MY GIRLS! Christmas Party 2007 :)

 Wish me luck!

What are you up to this weekend?

The New & Improved Running Playlist

Friday: Ran 2.86 miles in 31:24; average 10:59 min/mile
Saturday: Ran 5 miles in 57:30; average 11:30 min/mile

Saturday is my long run day. I was only supposed to do 4 miles, but with my new running playlist {see below} and watching Top Chef {yes, I prefer sensory overload while running on the treadmill}, I felt so good after 4 miles that I went for 5. It was a great run, but now my right knee is hurting a bit. I'm afraid that I'm getting IT {iliotibial} band pain again {happened with my left knee towards the end of training and the Mini last year}, so I'm going to do some research and probably buy a foam roller this weekend on Amazon.

the foam roller.

Must. Stay. Injury. Free.

I've been meaning to revamp my running music for awhile now, but I kept forgetting about it and then remember again each time I went for a run. So, after we got back from dinner last night, I went through iTunes and put a new Running Playlist together. I've had a Workout Playlist for years that I just keep adding to, but lately, I end up wanting to skip through half of the songs to get to the good ones. My current Workout Mix includes everything from Bon Jovi {yes, I love him and his music}, Madonna, and Michael Jackson to 50 Cent, Outkast, and Usher. As you can tell, I have a wide range in music taste. After adding, deleting, and moving some songs around, here is my new list. There are 32 songs totaling 2 full hours of music.

  1. Pump It, Black Eyed Peas
  2. Born To Run, Bruce Springsteen
  3. The Way You Move, Big Boi
  4. Only The Young, Journey
  5. Love Makes The World Go Round, Madonna
  6. Moves Like Jagger, Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera
  7. Hey Ya!, Outkast
  8. Forget You, Cee Lo Green
  9. Yeah!, Usher featuring Lil' Jon & Ludacris
  10. Dynamite, Taio Cruz
  11. Tightrope, Janelle Monáe (feat. Big Boi)
  12. Runaway, Bon Jovi
  13. Born This Way, Lady GaGa
  14. More, Usher
  15. Hold It Against Me, Britney Spears
  16. Tonight (I'm Lovin' You), Enrique Iglesias [feat. Ludacris & DJ Frank E]
  17. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), Journey
  18. Tik Tok, Ke$ha
  19. Viva La Vida, Coldplay
  20. Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It), Beyoncé
  21. Closer, Ne-Yo
  22. I Like It, Enrique Iglesias (feat. Pitbull)
  23. Mint Car, The Cure
  24. Ask The Lonely, Journey
  25. DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love, Usher (feat. Pitbull)
  26. Be Good To Yourself, Journey
  27. Let It Rock, Kevin Rudolf & Lil Wayne
  28. Somebody Told Me, The Killers
  29. Over And Over, Madonna
  30. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough (2003 Edit), Michael Jackson
  31. Club Can't Handle Me, Flo Rida (feat. David Guetta)
  32. B.O.B., OutKast

I think it's a good start, but I'll definitely want to add to it so that I don't get bored with it after a couple of weeks. I plan on making specific 5K, 10K, 15K, and half-marathon specific playlists to motivate me through those races and hopefully finish them by my goal times. I promise I'll share those too once I make them.

What are you favorite songs to run to?

Dance Party {of One}

I had fun "linking up" with another blog yesterday, so I thought I'd try it again today! Today, I'm joining Amber of Brunch with Amber for her "It's Okay" Thursday series.

It's okay...

...that a little bit of weight lifting yesterday totally kicked my butt. I really like the Nike Training Camp app, but geez, I need to do more of it! My arms are sore!

...to say that having a little dance party of one is part of your exercise for the day.

...to have spent far too much time on the computer instead of being productive over your holiday break.

...to move furniture around your house just because you need a change.

...to drink "alcohol-removed" wine with dinner because the real stuff gives you migraines.

...to go to the same restaurant over and over again with your besties {Kona on Friday night, ladies!}

...to have a ridiculously long to do list.

...to add something to your to do list just so you can check it off immediately. {come on, I know there are people out there that do it too!}

...to already start thinking of getting clothes for going to Florida in March. {yay sundresses and swimsuit coverups!}

...to still have Christmas decorations up. {it's not over yet, people!}

What are you okay with today???

Hello 2012!

 Happy New Year!!!

I hope you and yours had a great time ringing in the New Year. Here's what we were doing last night at our house...

my mom and I getting dinner ready
me excited about an alcohol-free wine that's not just grape juice {wine = migraines for me :( }
sitting down to a yummy steak dinner
eggnog in my moose mug!
my parents and my brother
good times were had by all...
Happy New Year!
~~~~~
I can't believe 2012 is here. Back in 2009, when I was graduating from medical school, I knew that 2012 would bring another graduation, only this one from residency. How is it that I only have 6 months left of residency? Crazy if you ask me!
I said in my post yesterday that I'm not really one for New Year's resolutions. I think they're too vague and hardly anyone ends up keeping them anyways. Instead of a list of resolutions, here's my {partial} to do list for 2012.
{in no particular order...}
  • Organize the office - go through papers, magazines. Organize cords, owner's manuals, files, etc.
  • Move some furniture around our upstairs - dressers, a couch, shelves
  • Re-finish a dresser or two
  • Paint the upstairs hallway
  • Paint the downstairs "man cave" and rearrange the posters and pictures
  • Organize the coat closet...yikes, it's a mess
  • Get some more shelving for the garage
  • Blog more regularly
  • Workout at least 4 days a week
  • Run my second half marathon with a new PR {hopefully close to the 2hr mark!}
  • Maybe run a third half marathon?
  • Run a few more 5k's and PR {sub 28!?}
  • Pray more
  • Become more involved at church - sign up to be a regular reader/prayer announcer, maybe join a bible study
  • Sign up for a dance or pilates class {I miss it so much! Anyone know of a good one in the Indy area?}
  • Get back into cooking and try out more recipes {I'll share the good ones!}
  • Have more family dinners with the hubby
  • Maybe expand the family??? {God, I'm trusting you on that one!}
  • Keep up with cleaning the house better {I really hate dusting}
  • Keep up with the ironing {I'm okay with laundry...I despise ironing!}
  • Travel to and explore a new city - San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, somewhere in Maine...
  • Pursue my dream to become a Sports Medicine physician {trusting God on that one too!}
And most importantly....
  • Be a happier, healthier me! {there's the typical resolution you were waiting for!}
Yes, it's a little lengthy, but, hey, I've got 366 {it's a leap year!} days to work on it! And you better believe that I'll be using this little ol' blog to help keep me accountable. I'm excited to see what this year has in store....come along with me for the ride! Happy 2012!
What are your resolutions this year?
